A Message to Young People

By Stephen Taylor  |  March 7, 2025

A.M., who is serving a life sentence for a crime committed as a child, has written a heartfelt letter to young people today. In his words, he sees himself in the struggles they face—challenges he once lived through over 30 years ago. Writing to his younger self, A.M. shares his reflections and answers questions with the hope of offering guidance and support.

He expresses deep regret for the violence he caused and wishes he had never gotten involved with gangs and drugs, where loyalty proved to be an illusion. A.M. describes life in prison as being like “stuck in high school forever,” but surrounded by people with little desire to change and lots of violence.

He warns against getting involved in other people’s problems and to stay strong, say no to negative influences, and avoid the traps that has caused him so much regret. Despite prison’s harsh realities, A.M. offers encouragement and hope. He urges young people to combat the feeling of helplessness that can consume those in prison by staying busy, curious, and loving—and never allowing hate to destroy you.
